What is a Qualifying child?

A qualifying child is a dependent who satisfies specific IRS criteria to generate eligibility for the Child & dependent tax credits, Earned Income Credit, and other family tax benefits. The child must be under age 17 at year-end, be the taxpayer's son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, sibling, or descendant of these relationships, live with the taxpayer for more than half the year, not provide over half their own support, and possess a valid Social Security number issued before the return due date.
