What is a 403(b) plan?
A 403(b) plan is a tax-sheltered annuity for employees of 501(c)(3) nonprofits, public schools, hospitals, and other eligible employers. Employees make pre-tax salary contributions to lower their taxable income, with growth deferred until distributions are taxed in retirement. For 2025, the elective deferral limit is $23,500, plus a $7,500 catch-up for those aged 50 or older. Long-tenured employees may also access up to $3,000 per year under the 15-year rule. Many plans offer a Roth option for tax-free qualified withdrawals. The Traditional 401k functions comparably for private-sector workers.
