What is a 1099-MISC?

The 1099-MISC is an IRS information return reporting miscellaneous income of $600 or more, including rent, royalties, prizes, awards, and certain legal settlements. Unlike the 1099-NEC, which covers nonemployee compensation, the 1099-MISC captures income not arising from service payments. Royalties require reporting when $10 or more is paid. Payers must furnish recipient copies by January 31, and file paper returns with the IRS by February 28 or electronic returns by March 31. Rent flows to Schedule E as passive income not subject to self-employment tax. The Augusta rule intersects with rental income reporting.
